Description

A rare Victorian Rose of Sharon pendant locket circa 1860, measuring 2 ¾ inches / 7cm in length. The pendant has been set with a 28mm by 20mm oval Amethyst approximately 30 carats, deep medium violet colour. The amethyst has been beautifully cut and the table inlayed with gold which holds the old rose cut diamonds in place. The largest of the six rose cut diamonds measures 6.5mm by 4.5mm approximately 0.58 carats.Set with six pearls of which the one at the base being flat natural looking.(please view all the photos, they form part of the description). The back has a chenier hinged locket, which opens to reveal the back of the amethyst.Silver foil is incorporated into the inside of the locket door which I presume use to hold a photograph. The pendant has no bail, instead its has a tube affixed to the stem that protrudes from the top (see photographs) which would of been for a satin ribbon which would of held the pendant around the neck, today it could be used for a snake chain or rope chain of approximately 2.5mm thick.

The Rose of Sharon meaning:

The Rose of Sharon is a powerful symbol with deep meaning for Jews and Christians alike. With roots in the Biblical book of Song of Solomon, its symbolism has evolved to represent Love, beauty, and healing.Although specific interpretations can vary.

“According to the story, Sharon is the fertile plain, which due to the evolution of sand dunes went from being a farmland and grazing land to being arid and dry desert.Hence the strong meaning of the Rose of Sharon and the Lilly of the valley in the bible, where they are the reflections of surviving adversities. In a hostile land ,devoid of fertility, two beautiful flowers grow smoothly ,preserving their aroma and beauty. Fighting against the lack of water and the burning sun, it tries to wilt.”

“On the other hand, the Rose of Sharon grows in Israel and is interpreted in the bible as the figure of Jesus Christ ,who grew and survived surrounded by thorns, like a rose, maintaining its beauty and essence.”
